Assistant Director of Early Childhood Education


The Peninsula Jewish Community Center (PJCC) cultivates Jewish culture and values, builds community, and serves people of all ages on the North Peninsula of the San Francisco Bay Area. Our excellent educational, cultural, and recreational programs create a vibrant, inviting gathering place where people of all backgrounds and ages feel at home. Our warm and caring preschool serves 250 children, ages 2-5, and their families. Our play-based, child-led school philosophy emphasizes the values of responsibility, dignity, kindness, community, tradition, generosity and respect. Our large classrooms, beautiful outdoor spaces and wonderful enrichments including PE, Music and Gardening are highlights of our programs. Teachers collaborate together and enjoy ongoing professional development opportunities as a part of their schedule. In addition to a generous benefits package, teachers also receive membership to our Fitness Center including access to group fitness classes, pools, and workout facilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following, as well as other duties as assigned:

General Skill Set

  • A strong Early Childhood Education leader, with the ability to manage a large and diverse group of staff, children and families.
  • A warm, engaging and effective communicator with strong written and oral communication skills, including group presentation skills.
  • Outstanding supervision & management skills and experience
  • Kind, patient and loving demeanor, experience teaching preschool children of all ages and abilities.
  • Organized, detail-oriented, trustworthy and responsible.

Program Management

  • With Director and Assistant Director, manage all aspects of the preschool.
  • Serve as Preschool Camp Director.
    • Manage all aspects of Summer, Winter and Spring Preschool camps including hiring, curriculum and program content.
    • Collaborate with the school-age Camp Director & Assistant Camp Directors to develop the camp vision, schedule, marketing materials and all other aspects associated with camp.
    • Responsible for program enrollment, supplies and marketing for camps.
    • Responsible for hiring, supervision and evaluation of camp staff and the program as a whole.

Teacher Supervision and Curriculum Development

  • With the ECE Director, responsible for hiring, supervision and evaluation of preschool teaching staff.
  • Develop and oversee school and camp curriculum and work with teachers to enhance learning.
  • Provide professional development for teaching staff, including sharing new and cutting-edge trends in Early Childhood Education through staff in-service days and weekly staff meetings.
  • Providing support to teaching staff as needed.
  • Support and sustain positive morale of the staff. Assist in planning team building opportunities for staff members.

Parent Communication and Education

  • Help plan and participate in parent orientation meetings, Back to School Nights and other parent meetings as needed.
  • Assist with verbal and written parent communication as needed, including individual parent meetings and school-wide emails or newsletters.
  • Coordinate and provide learning opportunities to the parent community including parent education and Jewish education.
  • Provide support and resources to parents as needed.

Family Programs

  • Manage quarterly ECE family social programs, such as Shabbat Dinners and school-wide events.
  • Assist with Center-wide family programs, including Youth and Family programs.
  • Assist with marketing family programs within the Center, including “Baby and Me” programming.


  • May serve as Acting Director in the absence of the Director.
  • Assume opening and/or closing duties for the school/camp throughout the year.
  • Keep up to date with enrollment information; participate in preschool fairs with colleagues.
  • Participate in PJCC events as needed.
  • Work hours include nights and weekends, as needed.

Hours: Full-time, Monday through Friday with weekend and night events, as required.


Health Requirements

  • Must successfully demonstrate that their health condition allows them to perform the type of work assigned by completing a State Of California - Health And Human Services Agency licensing form LIC 503 (3/99) (PERSONAL). This includes documentation of TB test results.
  • Must be able to lift and carry a child weighing up to 50 pounds away from a potentially dangerous situation during an emergency that may/may not include an evacuation.
  • Must have the ability to act quickly and appropriately in hazardous situations and to provide first aid in emergency situations.
  • Must have current First Aid and CPR Certification, or be willing to become certified.

Master's degree (M. A.) in Child Development or equivalent; 4+years of programming, supervisory, and enrollment management experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Preschool experience and Site Director Certification or eligibility is required. Experience working in a Jewish preschool or community setting a plus. Previous preschool classroom teaching experience required.
