PJCC has NEW Tikkun Olam Partnership with My New Red Shoes!

In the coming year PJCC members and guests will have the opportunity to make a different in the lives of homeless and low-income children in San Mateo County through our new social action partnership with My New Red Shoes.  Keep your eyes out for upcoming events!

Did you know . . .

  • The average age of a homeless person in the United States is only 9 years old.
  • One in four Bay Area families can't afford the basics of housing, food, healthcare and childcare without some kind of public assistance.
  • There are 5,000 children in the Bay Area who are homeless; hundreds live in San Mateo County.

Contact My New Red Shoes at www.mynewredshoes.org for ways that you and your family can make a difference in the lives of these children. 

My New Red Shoes’ mission is to empower homeless youth to succeed in school by providing them with brand new clothing so that they may greet the school year with pride and by educating and rallying the youth community2010 goal is to clothe 3,000 Bay Area homeless children for their first day of school.  This is a simple gift of confidence for homeless children.

Volunteer at the PJCC

Like all JCCs, the PJCC relies on volunteers for their help within the community center as well as with our outreach efforts in the community at large. We welcome your participation. In fact, we rely on volunteers to help us provide our important community service. It’s a great way for you to get involved, meet other PJCC supporters, or to pass on the spirit of volunteering to your children and grandchildren. We have many fun opportunities for you to make a mark.

Volunteer with Children

Reading Tutor

In response to the overwhelming number of Bay Area school children reading below grade level, the Jewish Coalition for Literacy trains, places and supports volunteer reading tutors working with students in grades K-3.

Come to one of these free tutor training sessions:
Thursday, January 21, 6 pm- 8:30 pm (121 Steuart St, San Francisco)
Sunday, January 10, 10 am-12:30 pm (300 Grand Ave., Oakland)
Monday,  January 18, time TBA Oshman JCC (3921 Fabian Way, Palo Alto)

Volunteer with Seniors

Volunteer to be on one of the teams supporting Get Up & Go, the PJCC’s award -winning transportation and socialization program for no-longer driving older adults. Starting in February 2010 we will almost double our transportation program and we need your help to make it work for the isolated elder population.

Program Success Tracker
Assist with a critical part of the program – setting up and running a tracking system that helps Get Up & Go reach its target goals and allows us to get and keep our funding. For someone with data base management skills, this volunteer position can be divided into two tasks and you may volunteer for either or both: 1) creating a data base; 2) entering data on an ongoing basis.

Caring Phone Force
Volunteers who have been social workers, nurses, or other human services professionals will contact interested seniors and check in with elders who may be alone and isolated. 3-5 hours/week on work that can be done from home.

Spread the News Outreach Team
Help the Program Manager reach out to other organizations, families and care providers to let them know how we can help elders with our expanded service. Largely phone work that can be done at home 3-4 hours/week

Program Talent Scout
Help the Program Manager identify and contact interesting and entertaining speakers/musicians for the semi-monthly programs held for the seniors at the PJCC. Largely phone work that can be done at home 1-2 hours/week
