Eat Healthy Today for a Vibrant Brain Tomorrow
Nutritious food isn’t just good for your body—it also helps keep your brain vibrant and sharp. Try these following health tips to reap the rewards of a brain-healthy diet:
Vegetables: A recent federally funded study of 13,388 nurses found that people who ate more cruciferous and leafy vegetables, including broccoli, cauliflower, green lettuces and spinach, had a lower rate of decline on a battery of learning and memory tests. The more of these vegetables they ate, the better they performed.
Antioxidants, which include vitamins C, E, and beta carotene (a form of vitamin A), are thought to reduce oxidative damage to cells. Antioxidant-rich foods include blueberries, red grapes, prunes, beets, kale and spinach.
Omega-3 Fatty Acids are a particular type of polyunsaturated fats found in fatty fish. They are thought to help maintain brain function throughout life and may also help protect the brain from aging. The best sources of omega-3s are mackerel, herring, sardines, tuna, anchovies, whitefish, and sablefish.
B Vitamins are effective in lowering levels of homocysteine, a blood protein that is associated with increased risk for cardiovascular disease as well as Alzheimer's and other types of dementia.
Scientific studies also show that mental workouts for the brain are just as critical as physical exercise is for the body.
