The Koret-Taube Initiative
On Jewish Peoplehood

What is the Koret-Taube Initiative on Jewish Peoplehood?

The PJCC will offer increasingly rich and varied Jewish cultural and educational programs beginning Summer 2009, thanks to generous multi-year funding from the Koret Foundation and Taube Philanthropies

The PJCC will be working in collaboration with other leading cultural and higher education institutions with the goals of bringing programs of the highest caliber and quality to the entire North Peninsula community, deepening adult Jewish engagement on the North Peninsula, and offering programs that create meaningful Jewish experiences for all who participate.

As with all PJCC activities, our programs and events welcome participants from all faiths and cultural backgrounds.

What kinds of programs does the Koret-Taube Initiative support at the PJCC?

The Koret-Taube Initiative for Jewish Peoplehood will enable the PJCC to explore the Jewish “take” on countless facets of art, culture, and knowledge with the innovation, quality, and variety that are the hallmarks of the PJCC and the Bay Area. Whether dancing to the rhythms of Klezmer-bluegrass fusion or listening to leading intellectuals on contemporary Israel, people of all backgrounds will come together to enjoy the very best in Jewish culture, thought, and education.

What is “Jewish Peoplehood”?

For millennia, the concept of Jewish Peoplehood has inspired, intrigued, and perplexed Jews and non-Jews alike across the globe.  Are Jews defined by their culture?  Can there be Jewishness without Judaism as a faith? Are Jews a nation?  With the rise of Zionism and the birth of the modern Israeli state, how does the concept of a Jewish People change?  Some wonder if the very act of wrestling with these complex and fascinating issues might not itself help define modern Jewishness.

We invite you to join us in this unique exploration, through an ambitious array of entertaining, thought-provoking, and innovative Jewish cultural programs at the PJCC.  Thanks to the Koret-Taube Initiative on Jewish Peoplehood, the PJCC will offer high-profile events, lectures and artistic and educational activities for all age groups to elevate this age-old discussion to a new contemporary level.

As with all PJCC activities, our Koret-Taube Initiative programs and events seek participants from all faiths and cultural backgrounds.

Why is the Koret-Taube Initiative important right now?

The PJCC, Koret Foundation and Taube Philanthropies share a belief that a thriving Jewish life in our region requires a deepening of adult Jewish engagement in the community and a multi-level, multigenerational approach to programs.

Through the Koret-Taube Initiative on Jewish Peoplehood, the PJCC wishes to provide many avenues for our diverse community to explore Jewish life through a wide variety of accessible, innovative, and stimulating programs.  People of diverse backgrounds and ages will experience what Jewish culture has to say through music, art, and the pursuit of knowledge in all its forms.

It is also our hope that the Koret-Taube Initiative on Jewish Peoplehood will be a catalyst for new funding sources and will expand sources of future matching funds for new programming and collaborations with high-quality partner organizations.

Why launch the Koret-Taube Initiative at the Peninsula Jewish Community Center?

The Koret Foundation and Taube Philanthropies selected the PJCC for this initiative because of its demonstrated commitment to Jewish programming and because the Center has developed an audience for innovative Jewish programs with broad appeal. The Peninsula Jewish Community Center has an established reputation for high quality, novel approaches to showcasing and exploring Jewish culture in all its forms.  As an open and welcoming institution in the North Peninsula with a capacity for effective outreach and communications, we attract a diverse set of participants in valuable programs for families and individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

The thousands of people attending PJCC cultural, educational, or holiday events each year are hungry for more.  Market research shows that up to 35% of the Jewish participants in cultural and Jewish programs at the PJCC are not involved with any other Jewish organization.  After attending a cultural arts event, 80% or more say they wish to attend more in the future. The Koret-Taube Initiative on Jewish Peoplehood positions the PJCC to meet this need.
