koret taube philanthropies

The PJCC is proud to be a part of the Initiative on Jewish Peoplehood, co-funded by the Koret Foundation and Taube Foundation for Jewish Life and Culture. Through this initiative, we present programs and celebrations that bring community together, travel and education programs that build connections to Israel and the heritage of the Diaspora communities, innovative classes and participatory experiences that elevate Jewish literacy and invigorate Jewish practice. The PJCC believes that the ongoing vitality of the Jewish people lies in the richness of its communal life, the vibrancy and diversity of its cultural and spiritual expression, and the shared experiences that inspire a sense of connectedness to Jews everywhere and in every generation.

As we approach Israel's 70th anniversary, we will explore what the most recent research on the first Arab-Israeli War reveals about the military aims of the Israelis, the Palestinians and the Arab states; the nature of the war as a conflict between nationalist movements or as a war of Jihad; and the resulting creation of Palestinian refugees and Jewish refugees from Arab countries. Connections will be drawn between the consequences of the 1948 war and current Middle Eastern realities and problems.

Guest Speaker

Benny MorrisBenny Morris is professor in the Middle East Studies Department at Ben Gurion University of the Negev and since 2015 has been visiting professor of Israel Studies at Georgetown University. One of Israel's pre-eminent historians, his academic work examining the Zionist narrative and the establishment of the State has provoked controversy on both sides of the political spectrum. Morris was a journalist at the Jerusalem Post and has written articles in both the Israeli press and in publications worldwide. He has published ten books, including The Birth of the Palestinian Refugee Problem 1947-1949 and 1948, The First Arab-Israeli War.
