Exploring Opera: Essentials for Appreciation

Does opera seem overwhelming, maybe intimidating? It can be! Does a woman wearing a helmet with horns, carrying a spear, and screeching send you in the other direction? Why wouldn't it? Does a death scene have to take a ½-hour. Sometimes! This series will de-mystified this stunning art form by offering an overview of its history from the Baroque to the Contemporary; understanding the vastly different voice types; learning vocabulary and jargon; experiencing a wide range of repertoire from popular works to lesser-known gems; comparing differences in production, diction and conducting. Embark on this educational and fun (yes, fun!) musical journey filled with video performance clips, which bring the beauty and excitement of opera into class. This overview is terrific for both the opera newcomer and the long-time fan. Instructor James Sokol has worked at the New York City Opera, the San Francisco Opera and was the Executive Director of the Pocket Opera.

Food For Thought: Extraordinary Jewish Achievements

October 4: The Revival of Hebrew as a Spoken Language
Have you ever wondered how ancient Hebrew, the language of prayer, grew from 13,000 words to a thriving language of 120,000 words spoken by more than 7 million native speakers in Israel? Seth Watkins, attorney and Semitic linguist with degrees from Brandeis, Stanford and the University of California, traces the history of the revival of Hebrew as a spoken language and the life of Eliezer Ben Yehuda, the man who made it possible.

October 18: The Golden Age of Jewish Achievement
Author Steven Pease raises two questions in his thought provoking book: Are Jews disproportionately high achievers? And if so, why? His book illustrates the life and achievements of hundreds of remarkable Jews over 200 years, and attempts to analyze the 'why?' by making the case for culture. A venture capitalist and co-chair of the U.S. Russia Foundation for Economic Advancement, Pease took five years to compile and write his book.

August 23 -$100 a Day
